1971 saw the formation of American rock band The Eagles in Los Angeles. The Eagles, with five number-one singles and six number-one albums, six Grammy Awards, and five American Music Awards, were one of the most successful musical acts in North America throughout the 1970s. Glenn Frey (guitars, vocals), Don Henley (drums, vocals), Bernie Leadon (guitars, vocals), and Randy Meisner (bass guitar, vocals) were recruited by Linda Ronstadt as band members, with some touring with her and all playing on her third solo album, prior to forming their own band on David Geffen's new Asylum Records label.
Two singles from their 1972 debut album, Eagles, reached the top 20 in the United States and Canada: "Take It Easy" and "Witchy Woman." The following year's follow-up album, Desperado, reached at number 41 in the United States, despite the success of the song "Desperado." In 1974, guitarist Don Felder joined the Eagles, and their album On the Border produced the top-40 smash "Already Gone" and the Eagles' first number-one single in the United States and Canada, "Best of My Love," which reached the top 15 in Australia, becoming their first international hit. One of These Nights earned their first number-one record in the United States and a top-ten album in many other countries in 1975. It featured "One of These Nights," their first top-10 hit outside of North America, as well as "Lyin' Eyes" and "Take It to the Limit," both of which reached the top five in the United States. Joe Walsh, a guitarist and vocalist, replaced Leadon in 1975.
Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975) (1976) is the best-selling album in the United States, with 38 million copies sold, and it prepared the public for the 1976 release of Hotel California, which would go on to sell over 26 million copies in the United States (ranking third all-time) and 32 million copies worldwide. The album produced two number-one singles in the United States and Canada, "New Kid in Town" and "Hotel California," with the latter becoming their lone top-ten hit in the United Kingdom, as well as hitting the top 10 in New Zealand and numerous European countries, including number two in France.
In 1977, Meisner was succeeded by Timothy B. Schmit. The Eagles released their final studio album in 1979 with The Long Run, which spawned the number-one single "Heartache Tonight" and the top-ten songs "The Long Run" and "I Can't Tell You Why" in the United States. The Eagles disbanded in 1980 but reformed in 1994 with the release of Hell Freezes Over, a collection of live and new studio recordings, and continued to tour. The Eagles released their sixth number-one album in the United States, Long Road Out of Eden, in 2007 and launched the Long Road Out of Eden Tour in 2008. In 2013, in connection with the publication of the documentary History of the Eagles, they embarked on the extensive History of the Eagles Tour. After Frey's passing in January of 2016, the Eagles reformed in 2017, with Glenn's son Deacon Frey and Vince Gill sharing lead vocals for Frey's songs until the former's departure in 2022.
The Eagles are one of the best-selling bands in the world, having sold over 200 million records, including 100 million in the United States alone. In 1998, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and in 2004, Rolling Stone placed them number 75 on its list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time."
